On a solemn event on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War

On May 7, a solemn event was held on the territory of the Russian Embassy in Jamaica with the participation of compatriots and Jamaican citizens who are friendly to our country, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

Russian Ambassador to Jamaica Sergey Petrovich addressed the audience with a welcoming speech, stressing the importance of preserving the historical memory of the feat of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. He also noted the need to firmly and consistently counter attempts to falsify history aimed at diminishing the contribution of our country to the defeat of Nazism.

Hieromonk of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (Moscow Patriarchate), who came to the island from Grenada, Fr. Ambrose (Sitalo) held a thankstiful prayer in memory of those who died in the Great Patriotic War.

A representative of the Russian-speaking diaspora on the island Yuri Peshkov delivered an address, and the young compatriots read the poem by Georgiy Rublev "It was in May, at dawn" and told about the feat of the Soviet soldier.

The Embassy staff organised a concert and deployed a field kitchen. The event was accompanied by songs of the wartime.

Also as part of the Embassy's activities in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Victory, the employees of the diplomatic mission and their family members joined the participation in the global initiative "Garden of Remembrance". The national flower (tree) of Jamaica Lignum Vitae was planted on the territory of the Embassy. The plant is known for its beautiful blue and purple flowers that bloom in summer
